Tis the season to be…..JOLLY? It’s no secret that while December is a festive month it can come with stress, anxiety and a credit card financial hangover.

Last Christmas season “Americans racked up more than $1,000 in holiday debt.” According to CNBC - “For a shopper making a minimum payment of $25 a month on a $1,054 tab, that means it would take until 2023 to pay down the balance.” YIKES!

I have been there before used my credit cards to buy Christmas gifts, and impress friends and family with luxury gifts. Then it took years to pay my December bill. Then once I could see financial freedom I started to budget during the other 11 months for Christmas gifts. I started paying cash, then I became disciplined and used my credit card for the points, then paid the entire balance off, only using what I budget through the year. I also realized it is not the material thing that matters. It is quality time and thoughtfulness. And cookies, I will bake cookies for my loved ones!

This shopping season I challenge you to 1. Reach out to a coach or advisor and find a way to budget for the holidays. 2. If you have to use a credit card find a budget RIGHT NOW, and then come up with a plan to pay the balance off ASAP. 3. Find new ways to spread Christmas cheer, I like to bake, shop locally, and simply spend time with my friends and family. The best gift of all is time.
